Árainn Mhór – Ailt an Chorráin Blueway

About the Blueway

The Árainn Mhór – Ailt an Chorráin Blueway is a network of walking, cycling and water trails linking Donegal’s largest offshore island with the mainland harbour at Ailt an Chorráin. It is run by the island’s own co-operative.

Árainn Mhór lies off the west coast of Donegal, reached by ferry from the harbour at Ailt an Chorráin. It is a Gaeltacht island: Irish is a working language here, not a heritage exhibit, which is why this site is published in both languages rather than translated as an afterthought.

Who runs it

Comharchumann Oileán Árainn Mhór — the Arranmore Island Co-operative — is a community-owned organisation based on the island. It runs the Blueway, publishes the Seo Árainn Mhór app, and maintains this site.

What the Blueway is

Four waymarked routes, one on the island and three around Ailt an Chorráin, together with the water that connects them. The routes are open all year and free to walk. Three of the four start on the mainland, which is worth knowing when you plan a day around the ferry.

The app

Seo Árainn Mhór carries the same trails, businesses, events and stories as this site, and keeps working once the signal stops — which, on parts of the island, it does. Businesses keep their own listings in it, so the opening hours you read here come from the people who set them.
